VI- Reading Comprehension (40 Marks ) Read the following passage carefully, then answer the questions below: The weather gets colder, days get shorter and leaves turn colour and fall off the trees. Then, winter is here soon. Snow covers the ground and people live in warm houses and wear heavy coats outside. Our food comes ready-made for us. But, what about animals? Animals have different types of winter survival strategies. They adapt to their environment, migrate or start to hibernate. Hibernation is one of the main adaptation techniques that allow certain animals to survive long, cold winters. Hibernation is like a very deep sleep that allows animals to save their energy when there is little or no food available. True hibernators body functions go through several changes; their body temperature drops, and the heart rate slows. True hibernators include the jumping mouse, brown bat, and several ground squirrels. Other animals, such as the skunk and raccoon, are not considered true hibernators because they wake up in the winter to feed, and their body functions do not change much. Since they only sleep for a little bit at a time, the term dormancy or light sleeping is used to describe their behaviour. The largest animals to hibernate are bears. Their heart rate may slow down from a usual 40 50 beats per minute to 8-12 beats per minute, but their body temperature changes very little, so they are able to wake up quickly. How do animals know it is time to hibernate? Hibernating animals have a special substance in the blood called hibernation inducement trigger, or HIT. This substance becomes active in the fall, when the days become cooler and shorter. When HIT becomes active, the animals start preparing for winter. Animals get ready for the hibernation period. Some animals store food so that they can eat when they wake up for short periods. Other animals eat a lot of extra food in late summer and fall while it is plentiful. This adds excess fat, which is used later. This fat keeps them warmer. Besides, it acts as a source of energy while they are sleeping. Some animals' body temperature lowers until it becomes as cold as the surrounding temperature. Others' breathing slows and metabolic rate drops. Hibernators have two kinds of fat: regular white fat and a special brown fat (brown tissue). The brown fat forms patches near the animal's brain, heart and lungs. Its main purpose is to provide extra body heat. It also sends a quick burst of energy to warm these organs first when it is time to wake up. A) Choose the correct answer from a, b, c and d:(4x4½=18 marks) 1. Which of the following would be the main idea of paragraph (2)? a. Seasons of the year b. Advantages of summer time c. Animals' survival strategies in winter d. Different types of tame and wild animals 40 3 6

Bears are the largest animals to hibernate but they can wake up quickly because. a. they hibernate during the summer only b. unlike most animals, they rarely hibernate c. they never eat any food before hibernation d. their body temperature changes very little B) Answer the following questions: (3x4=12 marks) 5.
